This is my first published crochet pattern! I’ve been playing around with my own patterns for a while, but this is the first one I’ve gotten around to publishing. Free free to ask questions or post corrections/suggestions in the comments below. You can also add this pattern to your queue or projects on Ravelry.
Materials
- 8ply yarn (two different colours if you wish)
- 4mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Button (about 20-30mm wide)
Stitches
This pattern is written using US stitches. Stitches used are listed below with corresponding UK stitches in parentheses.
ch : Chain stitch
sc : Single crochet (dc)
dc : Double crochet (tr)
tr : Treble crochet (dtr)
fsc : Foundation chain
The foundation chain is equivalent to a row of chain stitches and single crochets, but is slightly less cumbersome to form a long chain (once you get the hang of it) and provides a more naturally flexible (stretchy) foundation than chain stitches do.
I like the foundation chain tutorial on PurlBee.com to learn how to create this stitch.
Method
- 100 fsc
- Along the bottom of the chain (keeping the chain right side up and working in rounds for the whole pattern), 3sc in first stitch, 13sc, *skip 3 st, 7tr in next st, 1sc* repeat from * to * 9 times, 13sc, 3sc in last st.
- Repeat previous row along next side, 2sc.
Change colour now if using 2 colours. - 3sc in middle st of previous increase, 13sc, 1dc, ch3, *1sc in middle tr (top of shell), ch3, 2dc in sc between shells, ch3* rpt 8x, 1sc in top of last shell, ch3, 1dc, 13sc, 3sc in next st, 2sc.
- Repeat previous row along next side, 3sc.
- 3sc in next st, 11sc, skip 3st, 6tr in dc, *1sc in sc at top of shell, 6tr in between next 2dc* rpt 8x, 1sc in sc at top of last shell, 6tr in dc, skip 3 st, 11sc, 3sc in next st, 4sc.
- Repeat previous row along next side, 5sc.
Change back to original colour now if using 2 colours. - sc in every st along one side and end
- At corner, turn, ch6, slip stitch to sc at other corner, turn, 7sc along chains (forms button hole).
- sc along the rest of the headband and slip stitch to join with first sc of step 8. Finish off.
- Fasten button to end opposite button hole.
Variations
Colours
I used two colours of yarn, a light and darker pink, but you could use one colour just as well.
Size and yarn
8ply yarn and 4mm hook are recommended, but you may use any yarn/hook combination that creates the effect you want and that fits around your head.
The fsc chain in the pictured product is about 60cm long; you may either adjust your yarn/hook size to achieve this size.
You may also increase or decrease the initial fsc chain by multiples of 8 and adjust the number of shells accordingly (1 shell per 8fsc) for a longer or shorter headband.
Of course, you may also adjust the position of the button for the fit you want.
